National Space Society Space Settlement Contest 2022 Results

We had over 17,000 students participate with over 3000 entries, nearly doubling the number of entries from last year's contest. Entries came from 22 countries around the world. Congratulations to all of the winners!

The Grand Prize winning entry came from St. Flannen’s College secondary school in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland. They titled their project “Mag Mell,” a name which means “delightful plain” and comes from Irish mythology as one of the names of the Celtic Otherworld. The settlement is designed to be constructed robotically in a high Ceres orbit. The judges were impressed by the team’s focus on the necessary raw materials and where to get them, primarily via a space elevator from the surface of Ceres. The team also showed a lot of awareness for some of the more innovative ideas out there for enabling a sustainable and profitable commercial space sector. A PDF of their winning entry is available at the link below.

The winning team is eligible for the Herman Rubin memorial scholarship of $5,000, which is contingent on giving a talk on their project at this year’s International Space Development Conference (ISDC). The team of 12th graders has already confirmed their attendance, and we look forward to their presentation!
