2009 NSS Space Settlement Calendar Art Contest Submission Requirements

General

The deadline for submissions to the NSS Space Settlement Art Contest is January 11, 2008 (contest is now closed). Artists are allowed to submit more than one entry to the contest. Since the National Space Society is an organization with members and chapters spanning the globe, our contest is open to all citizens of planet Earth.

All artists submitting artwork will be required to agree to the contest’s Terms and Conditions for Submitted Artwork.

All submissions must be made in a digital format and will only be accepted via the Space Settlement Art Contest Submission Form.

A screening process will be in place and the committee reserves the right to reject any submission without showing cause.

Image Subject Matter

All submitted art must be a realistic depiction of a human space settlement within the Solar System. Preference will be given to those works featuring views of the settlement that clearly establish the settlement’s setting. “Space settlement” refers to a large, permanent habitat off Earth, rather than a “base,” “outpost,” or “station.” For background information about space settlements, and clarification of what is meant by a space settlement, please refer to our NSS Space Settlement Art Contest Resources Page.

Additional details as to acceptable content and how judges will be evaluating the artwork can be found in the Judging Guidelines for Submitted Artwork document.

Image Technical Specifications

You are free to choose any medium to
use for the creation of your artwork, but submissions must be in digital format. For the initial submission, images must be in JPEG format and must not exceed 8 megabytes in size. Images are to be presented in landscape mode with pixel dimensions of 4350 pixels wide by 3450 pixels high. If an image is one of the winners of the contest, the artist will be required to submit a TIFF version of the image that is 300 dpi and 14 ½” x 11 ½” in size in either RGB or CMYK color (generic profile). If submitted in RGB, the printer will convert to CMYK. The printed image in the calendar will be cropped to 14 x 11 inches.
