Erich Fischer Biography

Erich M. Fischer, Ph.D. is a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Space Society (NSS).

Dr. Fischer is a Principal and a leader of Booz Allen Hamilton’s Aerospace & Defense practice, providing direct management and technology consulting to leading Aerospace & Defense industry clients around the world.  Specializing in the space domain, Dr. Fischer leads Booz Allen’s business of direct consulting to space-related industrials and services companies, and supports government space-related agencies such as NASA, NOAA and the NRO.  His specialties include corporate and market strategy, large-scale transformation and post-merger integration, product development, and design for affordability.  Based in McLean, VA, he has 18 years of experience as a consultant, industry executive, and space scientist.

Prior to joining Booz Allen, Dr. Fischer was an Executive at Intelsat, the world’s largest fixed satellite services operator, and was a Board member of WildBlue Communications.  During his tenure at Intelsat, he developed the first commercial strategy for transforming the company from an IGO to a commercial company, and subsequently built and ran the businesses that shifted Intelsat’s focus from a point-to-point voice space segment operator to a hybrid satellite/terrestrial solutions provider.  He also spent a number of years consulting at McKinsey & Co. where he co-led the North American Product Development practice, and counseled clients across multiple industries including aerospace & defense, highly-engineered products, and financial services.

Dr. Fischer began his career working on planetary science missions in conjunction with NASA, CNES and BMDO.  He served with the science teams on Phobos II, Galileo and Clementine 1, specializing in visible and near-infrared remote quantitative spectroscopy.  Dr. Fischer holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. from Brown University in Geological and Planetary Sciences, and a B.A. from Dartmouth College in Earth Sciences, Physics and Astronomy.
