Space Settlement Art Contest: The Return to Abalakin Orbital Space Settlement

The Return to Abalakin

by Alexander Preuss
Category: Orbital Settlements
Grand Prize Winner for 2008 Calendar

Description: Abalakin is a giant torus-shaped space habitat with artificial gravity produced by rotation.

Medium/Tools Used: At first I did a lot of sketches on paper and on my PC to find the right point of view and a good color scheme. The whole image and every construction in it was built with 3DSMAX. This project was the most ambitious 3D scene I have ever created, using over 6,000,000 polygons and 200
MB of textures. The main scene including all layers took over 60 hours to render. At the end I used Photoshop for color corrections and some special effects like the glows in the scene.
